The Big City

New York City!

I love New York City. I will have been here for 2 years this summer, and I still feel like there’s so much more for me to explore in this great city. I’ve also lived in Astoria, Queens for these 2 years (on apartment #2 and roommate #5 and 6). My roommates call me the one-woman tourism center for Queens. I’m always trying to convert people into Queens dwellers.

Come on, why are you paying exorbitant amounts to live in upper Manhattan when you can pay half as much, double the space, and have the same distance of a subway ride? I personally think these people are insane. I’ll often throw out Queens statistics that I find interesting. Did you know that there are more than 2.25 Million people living in Queens and more than half of them weren’t born in the good old USA? There are more languages spoken in the 109 square miles that contains Queens than any other place on the planet.

PBS is great for these things, I watched a walk through Queens and was mesmerized. Another thing about Queens is the food! I have an undying love for all things culinary, so being able to walk a few blocks and get amazing ethnic food is heaven for me. The groceries are way cheaper than in the city as well for when I’m cooking for myself.

In this Manhattan vs. Queens war, I think Queens definitely wins. I can only think of a few advantages… being able to write New York, New York on the return address, proximity to Central Park, more Starbucks for those coffee addicts, easier to grab a taxi, more blockbuster movie stores… and? That’s it.

Queens!

How could you forget to mention the movie, Coming To America? That movie put Queens on the map!

But do you guys really live in Queens? Your address says Astoria?

You guys are posers.

Oh, we're definitely in Queens. For some reason, noone in Queens actually writes Queens in their address, it's always whatever neighborhood they live in... astoria (which is also known as long island city), sunnyside, jackson heights, Hunters Point, middle village, and I could keep going... I'm not sure how this came about. People in Brooklyn just write Brooklyn in their address no matter where they are.

So Pace, we're not posers, you just wish you could live in Astoria!

I love this! Some hick from Kentucky tries to comment on a city that he knows nothing about; but he didn't know that he was writing to the Queens Expert, who quickly put him in his place. He has a point about COMING TO AMERICA, but he should really leave the Queens trivia to you, Mags, and stick to his area of expertise: online shoe peddling.
